Life At Your Own Pace

Some people live life at a pace so fast it can be dizzying to keep up. I have never felt like one of those people. In school I remember caring so much about my responses to class discussions that by the time I would have my thoughts together the conversation had usually moved on to the next topic. More often than not I would not speak thinking "too late now".

The term "too much of a good thing" certainly applies when my normal pace starts to feel out of control with too many obligations, no matter how exciting they may be. Remembering that it is possible to still be connected to my friends and share our lives without driving two hours round trip for a one hour meetup is important (though there are times the drive is worth it no matter how far). Sometimes events are less important than making a connection. Sometimes it is hard to ask for a pass to a get together despite mounting stress because I tend to worry about pleasing others. Sounds familiar?!

Fortunately I have friends in my life who while being the best example of the importance of making time for each other, have taught me that sometimes it is ok to do it on the terms that work best for me. One of the best examples was when my best friend from high school after recieving an invitation to my wedding asked to come before the wedding and just spend time instead of coming for the wedding (my wedding was a laid back front yard wedding, just our style, not the affair of the century...not to be missed). Having not seen each other in years and living five state away the time we were able to spend together without the distractions of a wedding and a lot of people was priceless. As I excitedly add more and more events to my calender, sometimes those moments of anxiety hit as the unplanned events of life pick up their pace. It is in those moments that I have to remember that plans can sometimes change as long as your commitment to being a friend does not.
